Au XIIIe siècle. AVANT JC. près de la ville syrienne de Kadet, une bataille décisive a eu lieu entre l'armée du pharaon Ramsès II et les troupes du roi hittite (voir l'article «Royaume des Hittites»). L'armée égyptienne marchait en trois grands détachements. La distance qui les séparait était d'une journée de voyage. Leur adversaire, ayant concentré ses forces près de Kadesh, envoya des éclaireurs, dont le pharaon apprit que les ennemis étaient encore loin. Les Égyptiens n'ont pas eu le temps de se préparer et les chars des alliés des Hittites étaient déjà tombés sur eux. Seul le courage sans pareil du pharaon, qui rassemble ses soldats et organise la résistance, et l'indiscipline des Syriens, qui se précipitent pour dévaliser le camp égyptien, permettent au détachement de Ramsès II de tenir jusqu'à ce que le reste des forces approche. L'héroïsme du pharaon n'a cependant pas changé l'issue militaro-politique de la campagne : les Hittites ont évincé les Égyptiens de Syrie et de Palestine.

Un autre centre de développement militaire était situé loin à l'est de l'Égypte, de la Méditerranée et de la Mésopotamie.

Au milieu du IIe millénaire av. les éleveurs de bétail de la grande steppe eurasienne apportent aux frontières de la plaine chinoise une grande invention du Moyen-Orient - une charrette de combat à cheval, ainsi que des casques en bronze. L'État de Shang, au nord de la Chine, disposait d'une puissante armée constamment en guerre avec ses voisins « barbares », qui n'étaient capturés que pour être mis à mort douloureusement lors de sacrifices à la gloire de l'une ou l'autre divinité. Les armes du peuple Shan étaient des pioches plates en bronze sur un long manche, des haches en bronze, des lances à pointes massives, de grands couteaux de combat, de puissants arcs à poulies. Ils étaient recouverts d'armures-cuirasses en cuir verni épais et dur et de boucliers rectangulaires en bois ou tissés à partir de tiges et recouverts de cuir verni. Leurs adversaires des steppes utilisaient des pioches et des haches, des poignards et parfois de longs couteaux.

Les chars ont d'abord donné aux steppes des avantages indéniables. Mais lorsque les Chinois leur ont emprunté et maîtrisé la nouveauté, ce qui s'est passé en Égypte s'est répété : une base de production puissante et une abondance d'ouvriers qualifiés ont permis de créer une armée de chars. À la fin de la période Shan (XIIIe-XIe siècles av. J.-C.), les guerriers chinois combattaient protégés par des casques et des masques en bronze, des armures de cuir et des boucliers recouverts de disques de bronze. Mais les armes merveilleuses n'ont pas empêché les rois cruels d'être vaincus par leurs voisins - la tribu Zhou.

Les armes du début de la période Zhou ne différaient pas beaucoup des Shan - seuls les longs poignards et les formes complexes d'armes à longue perche, qui étaient préférées par les guerriers Zhou, se sont répandus. Sur un arbre du zhou, une pièce en métal de combat était fixée, qui était une combinaison d'une pioche et d'une lance, d'une hache et d'une lance, d'une masse et d'une lance. Les variétés de ces armes se sont encore améliorées. Les "barbares" du sud-ouest de la Chine fabriquaient leurs formes originales des mêmes types d'armes et d'équipements de protection similaires à ceux originaires de la Chine centrale.

 Au début du 1er millénaire av. en Syrie et en Palestine, une innovation remarquable apparaît - la cavalerie lourdement armée. Les cavaliers en casques pointus, avec des boucliers ronds étaient armés de lances et d'épées courtes et assis sur des chevaux blindés.

Les réalisations militaires de l'État assyrien renforcé (voir art. "Assyrie") étaient encore plus remarquables. Son armée, composée de membres libres de la communauté, est devenue un orage au Moyen-Orient. Des archers, des lanciers et des épéistes en casques pointus et en armure jusqu'aux genoux (ou jusqu'aux talons) à partir de plaques de bronze reliées les unes aux autres, avec des boucliers rectangulaires en bois, composaient l'armée à pied. Les sapeurs en armure creusaient sous le feu des assiégés debout sur les murs. La base de l'armée était constituée de détachements de chars, équipés de combattants en casques et armures, avec de petits boucliers ronds, des épées courtes et de longues lances. Le harnais des chevaux était recouvert de plaques de bronze.

Cavalerie assyrienne au IXe siècle AVANT JC. se composait d'archers, dont les chevaux étaient menés par d'autres cavaliers - porteurs de boucliers. Une telle "cavalerie jumelée" n'était pas très efficace au combat, et au 8ème siècle. AVANT JC. Les archers à cheval assyriens se passent déjà de guides au combat. De plus, des lanciers à cheval lourdement armés apparaissent parmi les Assyriens. Après avoir transformé l'armée, les rois assyriens ont fait des conquêtes sans précédent, subjuguant presque tout le Proche et la majeure partie du Moyen-Orient.
