La stratégie agressive de l'Égypte s'est distinguée par la création d'un système fiable de fortifications dans les zones frontalières. Aux frontières avec la Nubie au sud et le désert du Sinaï au nord, des forteresses géantes ont surgi, alternant avec des fortifications plus petites. Même les individus ne pouvaient pas traverser la frontière sans se faire remarquer. Les troupes frontalières étaient basées dans et autour des forteresses. À partir d'eux, des détachements d'explorateurs ont été formés, dont la tâche comprenait des opérations de reconnaissance, de commerce et d'échange, diplomatiques et militaires. Si nécessaire, des renforts étaient amenés des forteresses. La zone d'influence de l'Égypte s'est élargie, fournissant le flux d'or, de défenses d'éléphants, de plumes d'autruche, de peaux de léopard et de girafe, d'ébène, de cuivre, de vases, de vin, de dattes, de bétail, de guerriers asiatiques à la peau claire et d'esclaves du nord, de guerriers noirs. et les esclaves du sud.

Au XVIIIe siècle. AVANT JC. le roi de Babylone, Hammurabi (voir article "Babylone") unifie la Mésopotamie et défait la coalition des tribus de bergers. Les masses de vaincus à la recherche d'un abri se sont précipitées vers l'ouest, ont traversé les vallées fertiles mais exiguës de la Méditerranée orientale et ont atteint le delta du Nil. Puis des nomades militants de Canaan s'y sont installés, mais pas en pétitionnaires pacifiques... De l'autre côté de la frontière ils ont été accueillis par des personnes proches par la langue et la culture. Cependant, les bergers guerriers, habiles et courageux au combat étaient peu nombreux devant l'armée d'Égypte, qui s'était alors unie. L'issue de cet affrontement devait être décidée par l'arme.

Les guerriers asiatiques se sont battus avec de grands couperets en bronze en forme de faucille, de lourdes haches d'un terrible pouvoir perçant, des arcs puissants avec de lourdes flèches, se sont défendus avec des coquilles et des casques matelassés, des boucliers rectangulaires en cuir et en brindilles. La victoire des guerriers nomades était assurée par des cabriolets légers attelés par deux ou quatre chevaux ; des archers (ou lanciers, porteurs de hache, épéistes) montaient dessus, enchaînés des genoux aux lèvres dans des armures faites de plaques de bronze. La vue des chevaux, des chars, des guerriers, faits, semblait-il, de métal aveuglant, brillant de soleil, faisait une impression stupéfiante sur les guerriers égyptiens. Les Hyksos - comme les Égyptiens appelaient les conquérants - ont pris le contrôle de la partie nord du pays pendant près de deux siècles (voir l'article "L'Égypte ancienne").

Les Égyptiens n'ont pas perdu de temps durant ces siècles. Ils ont acquis des chevaux et des chars. Et bien que les Hyksos n'aient pas emprunté d'armes de protection, le commerce des chars a été mis en scène à l'échelle égyptienne : au lieu d'équipages uniques, ils avaient des milliers de chars. Et maintenant, l'armée transformée écrase les Hyksos, les chasse du pays et, sur les épaules d'un ennemi vaincu, fait irruption dans Canaan, les régions voisines de la Méditerranée orientale.

Au fil du temps, l'assaut des Égyptiens a commencé à rencontrer une rebuffade croissante. Les petits États de Syrie et de Palestine ont commencé à s'unir en coalitions, et les armes des soldats locaux ont dépassé celles de l'Égypte : métal et cuir, obus et casques renforcés de métal se sont répandus et améliorés. Les couvertures de protection des chevaux étaient gainées de métal, les corps des chars étaient rembourrés. Mais tout cela n'a pas beaucoup aidé à résister à l'armée égyptienne disciplinée, entraînée et énorme, dirigée par des commandants pharaons très capables et courageux.

Cependant, une troisième force est apparue dans la région - le puissant État hittite. On sait peu de choses sur les affaires militaires des Hittites : ils avaient des troupes à pied et chars, du matériel de siège et de puissantes forteresses, de beaux fers de lance en bronze, des poignards et des haches, des arcs avec des flèches, des ceintures et des obus en bronze empruntés à des plaques de métal à Canaan, des casques en bronze peigné d'origine syrienne. Le pouvoir des rois hittites n'était pas aussi lourd que celui des pharaons, et les dirigeants locaux devinrent volontiers leurs partisans.
